Better indicators of fuel auto-ignition characteristics in advanced engines

What would be a better alternative to the currently used octane/cetane numbers to represent fuel auto-ignition characteristics over the whole operating range of advanced engines? Can such an alternative be practically adopted by current refineries to adjust their fuel products to suit requirements of advanced engines? Can such an alternative be universal and independent of engine technology?
