Wine Storage

Joe Wadsack offers tips about port and wine storage. Learn how temperature, vibration, light and bottle position are critical factors in maintaining the quality of wine over time.

Wine Storage Tips:

  • Temperature – Conditions don’t have to be perfect as long as you maintain a constant temperature. Try to avoid fluctuations.
  • Vibration – Less is more. None is best. Avoid vibration ‘traps’ like kitchen storage near a washing machine as the constant heat and motion will quickly depreciate the quality.
  • Light – Always store in a dark place. Under the stairs (bottles on their sides) is a simple solution.
  • Bottle Position – Port and wine bottles are best kept on their sides. However, sparkling wines maintain freshness and quality if stored standing up.
